Clause-internal coherence

چکیده
Everyone laughed. What’s funny about this? If I had said, “Let’s take the short way,” it would have been understood that the shortness used in my description also provided a motivation for taking that route. Since I used the word “muddy” instead, it seemed as if I wanted to run that way because it was muddy, as if I enjoyed sloshing through the mud. Very often different parts of a clause are connected inferentially in this way even though there is no direct syntactic connection between them and even though there is no explicit lexical signal of the relation. Among the relations we find are the kinds of coherence relations we find between successive clauses or larger stretches of discourse. In Hobbs (1985) and other papers, I present an account of discourse structure in which the coherence relations are seen as possible interpretations of the adjacency of segments in the discourse. متن کاملBuilding coherence: A framework for exploring the breakdown of links across clause boundaries in schizophrenia.
Clinically, patients with schizophrenia show prominent abnormalities at the discourse level, with production characterized by tangential and illogical relationships between ideas and unclear references. Despite these clinical manifestations, most studies of language in schizophrenia have focused on semantic relationships between single words and the build-up of meaning within single-clause sent...

Infinitival constructions as in (2-b) are instances of non-coherent constructions. The infinitival complement forms an independent constituent which may be extraposed. It also forms a barrier for clause-bounded syntactic and semantic operations. Infinitival constructions as in (2-a) are instances of coherent constructions. The infinitival complement does not form an independent constituent, as ...

متن کاملThe Semantics of the Geographical Database Query Languages
In this paper, we analyze the various philosophies to define a query language for geographical database. The differences among the three possibilities of extending the SQL language rely on the definition of the clause Select: (1) the clause Select does not accept a spatial operator and the Where clause accepts one (or several) predicate defined between attributes; (2) the clause Select accepts ...
